Bridges
<< BACK
There's just something about a bridge that gets your
attention. On this page, I plan to post a few pictures of
various bridges that have caught my eye... I'll mix up Modern, big,
small... whatever grabs my eye...
I don't know how to sort these, so for now, I'll sort them East
to West...
check back here every so
often.. they'll be more, I'm sure!

Piscataqua River Bridge - Portsmouth, NH |
|
This bridge spans from New Hampshire to Maine over the
Piscataqua River Bay along I-95. It is the first "big
bridge" that I saw as a kid... its the one that sparked my
fascination with bridges, actually... even today, the thrill I
felt is renewed, assisted by the memory of how amazed I was as
a kid.

Saco River Bridge - Conway, NH |
|
This bridge was built in 1890, and its construction opened the
way for farmers to get their products to the market on an
economically viable route, which made the bridge an extremely
valuable resource.
Today, the bridge still spans the river, and it remains an
important part of the community as a whole

Russell Bridge - Albany, NH |
|
This is another old bridge spanning the Saco River... this
bridge was built by Amzi and Thomas Russell, brothers who
farmed in the area.
It was built to be "A hay load high by a hay load wide".
The first bridge on the site, also built by the Russell
brothers, was washed out a year after it was completed.
This bridge, finished in 1890, has stood the test of time.

Bath Bridge - Bath, NH |
|
Sort of out of the way as far as heading to the White
Mountains goes, this bridge is one of the longest covered
bridges in New England, as well as being the oldest bridge in
continual use... this bridge has spanned the Saco for more
than 170 years!

Astoria Bridge, Astoria, OR
|
|
This bridge spans 4 miles, crossing the Columbia River
Estuary, connecting Oregon to Washington. Its the
longest bridge I know of in the area. Its also quite
stunning to look at, and its even fun to drive across... you
never know what you'll see.

Interstate Bridge, Portland, OR |
|
Now two bridges, the original span was completed in 1917, and
was the first bridge across the Columbia. Now the path
of I-5, the bridge moves some 300,000 vehicles across its
deck every day.

Lewis and Clark Bridge, Longview, WA |
|
Built in the same period as the Astoria Bridge, the Lewis and
Clark, or "Longview" if you're a local, Bridge looks similar,
but on a smaller scale. It towers over the two cities it
joins, and is a vital link across Columbia River.

Aurora Street Bridge - Seattle, WA
|
|
Part of Highway 99, and one of the older bridges in town,
the Aurora Street Bridge has become part of the character of
the portions of the city it joins. Elegant in its old
styling, the bridge is an excellent example of the "can do"
attitude that built the city of Seattle.

21st Street Bridge - Tacoma, WA
|
|
Crossing the Foss Waterway in Tacoma, and joining the
industrial area of Tacoma to the downtown district, the
Cable-Stayed 21st Street Bridge is a very visual depiction
of Tacoma's attempt to change its image into a city looking
to the future...

Tacoma Narrows Bridge - Tacoma, WA |
|
This bridge is still known as "Galloping Gertie", a reference
to the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which collapsed less than
a year after its completion due to high winds.

Grays River Covered Bridge, Roseburg, WA |
|
Built in 1905, this is the only historic covered bridge in
Washington still being used.

This is probably one of the most famous bridges in the world! One cannot
think of San Francisco without thinking of this grand bridge... its truly
amazing!
