Greetings!

well, light rain is the expectation today, as a weak front passes over our region... but with the weather that's happening in some parts of the country, I really don't think anyone can complain!

Is the big one getting ready to rip?  Bending the rules didn't seem to work out, but things might get better in a bit... upwards of 2 feet of snow could hit the mid Atlantic states... More troubles for the IPCC, as India is now not trusting the UN's Climate Data... And, some great news about a new tactic in the 'art' of suicide bombing...

Happy Friday, everyone! Hope you have a great weekend!

The Trivia Challenge
And the winner was...   NOBODY

The question:

In the book "The little engine that could", what gender is the engine supposed to be?

The answer:

The little engine was a girl in the book.

Today's Challenge                                                                                 ANSWER THE CHALLENGE

What is the strongest earthquake on record?

Interesting News Tidbits
Sometimes, a story is too interesting NOT to share...

Getting ready to rip???

For the second time this month, a large quake happened at the southeastern corner of the Juan de Fuca plate, where the Mendicino Rift, the southern edge of the plate meets the rift that to the south forms the San Andreas Fault and to the north forms the Juan de Fuca Subduction Zone.

It is the Subduction Zone (Yellow arrows) that is ripe for the "250 year period earthquake" that in 1700 ripped, sending a devastating tsunami across the Pacific, and striking Japan, causing thousands of deaths... it also caused major problems in the Pacific North West, causing some native villages to be suddenly more than a mile inland in some places -- or more than a mile out to sea in others.  More than 50 years later, when the first Europeans made contact with them, they were still talking about it...  its also more than 60 years 'overdue'.

The zone is very similar to the one in Thailand that spawned the tsunami there, and to the one in Chile that was so strong (9.7+) that the sensors on Mt St Helens detected it... and then again when it made its way around the globe to pass by again.

Steve Walter, a seismologist at the USGS in Menlo Park, said Thursday's quake was not an aftershock because it occurred on a different fault, but "we could speculate it might have been triggered by the one last month."

When one area of the fault slips, it causes pressure on the other portions... eventually, one of them at either end of the fault line will cause a cascading 'rip' along the fault line, which will be felt as a 9+ quake that will shake for several minutes

Bending the rules didn't pan out... but it seems it might work out in the end...

Ten members of a U.S. missionary group who said they were trying to rescue 33 child victims of Haiti's devastating earthquake were charged with child kidnapping and criminal association on Thursday, their lawyer said.

Edwin Coq said after a court hearing that a judge found sufficient evidence to charge the Americans, who were arrested Friday at Haiti's border with the Dominican Republic. Coq attended Thursday's hearing and represents the entire group in Haiti.

Group leader Laura Silsby has said they were trying to take orphans and abandoned children to an orphanage in the neighboring Dominican Republic. She acknowledged they had not sought permission from Haitian officials, but said they just meant to help victims of the quake.

The children taken from the group, ranging in age from 2 to 12, were being cared for at the Austrian-run SOS Children's Village in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday.

The U.S. citizens, most of them members of an Idaho-based church group, were whisked away from the closed court hearing to jail in Port-au-Prince, the capital. Silsby waved and smiled faintly to reporters but declined to answer questions.

Coq said that under Haiti's legal system, there won't be an open trial, but a judge will consider the evidence and could render a verdict in about three months.

A Haitian-born pastor who said he worked as an unpaid consultant for the group insisted the Baptists had done nothing wrong.

The Rev. Jean Sainvil said some of the children were orphans and might have been put up for adoption. Children with parents were to be kept in the Dominican Republic, and would not lose contact with their families, Sainvil said in Atlanta.

"Everybody agreed that they knew where the children were going. The parents were told, and we confirmed they would be allowed to see the children and even take them back if need be," he said.

Even Prime Minister Max Bellerive has said he recognized the Americans may simply have been well-meaning who believed their charitable Christian intent justified trying to remove the children from quake-crippled Haiti.

Right in the midst of 'Global Warming'

What? A major nor'easter will strike the Mid-Atlantic states producing major snow accumulations and strong winds.

When? Storm begins around midday Friday and lasts through the majority of Saturday.

Where? High-populated areas of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania will likely all experience big snow totals.  Washington, DC and Baltimore could experience foot plus snow totals.

How much snow?  I'll let the map do the talking.  This map takes us out to 48 hours.  This map will update automatically with new forecast totals as the event approaches in time and as forecasts are tweaked.

Another round of snow and ice targets the northern Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic as a moisture-rich storm system tracks northward from the Gulf of Mexico.

Snow has changed to sleet and freezing rain over western North Carolina where some mountain locations picked up as much as 5 inches of snow. Snow and freezing rain are falling in southern West Virginia as snow moves northward through western Virginia.

Isolated power outages are possible with some ice accumulating on trees and power lines.

Heavy 2-to-locally-4-inch rain stretching from northern Florida into Tidewater Virginia will result in spotty flooding.

But the main event with this storm will be heavy snow in the Mid-Atlantic States. Snow will begin in the Washington area this afternoon and spread northward towards Philadelphia by evening.

Heavy snow will continue into Saturday before winding down by evening. Travel may grind to a halt for a time, especially overnight and Saturday.

By the time the storm ends, many areas in northern Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania will have over a foot of snow. Some places may end up with nearly two feet of snow from this storm.

As the low pushes off the coast, it will strengthen quickly and produce very strong winds, especially along the Mid-Atlantic coast. Gusts between 45 and 50 mph are possible from southern New Jersey to the Norfolk area Friday night and Saturday morning.

Blizzard warnings are in effect for southeastern areas of New Jersey as well as much of Delaware.

It is also worth mentioning that this storm will spread snow as far west as the Ohio Valley.

Winter storm warnings are in effect westward into Indiana. A swath of six-to-locally-12-inch snowfall could fall from central Indiana into southwestern Pennsylvania.

And on a related note: India says it can't rely on the UN's IPCC

The Indian government has established its own body to monitor the effects of global warming because it “cannot rely” on the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the group headed by its own Nobel prize-winning scientist Dr R.K Pachauri.

The UN's IPCC released a report that suggested less than 30

The move is a significant snub to both the IPCC and Dr Pachauri as he battles to defend his reputation following the revelation that his most recent climate change report included false claims that most of the Himalayan glaciers would melt away by 2035. Scientists believe it could take more than 300 years for the glaciers to disappear.

The body and its chairman have faced growing criticism ever since as questions have been raised on the credibility of their work and the rigour with which climate change claims are assessed.

In India the false claims have heightened tensions between Dr Pachauri and the government, which had earlier questioned his glacial melting claims. In Autumn, its environment minister Mr Jairam Ramesh said while glacial melting in the Himalayas was a real concern, there was evidence that some were actually advancing despite global warming.

Dr Pachauri had dismissed challenges like these as based on “voodoo science”, but last night Mr Ramesh effectively marginalized the IPC chairman even further.

Great news...

Agents for Britain's MI5 intelligence service have discovered that Muslim doctors trained at some of Britain's leading teaching hospitals have returned to their own countries to fit surgical implants filled with explosives, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

Women suicide bombers recruited by al-Qaida are known to have had the explosives inserted in their breasts under techniques similar to breast enhancing surgery. The lethal explosives – usually PETN (pentaerythritol Tetrabitrate) – are inserted during the operation inside the plastic shapes. The breast is then sewn up.

Similar surgery has been performed on male suicide bombers. In their cases, the explosives are inserted in the appendix area or in a buttock. Both are parts of the body that diabetics use to inject themselves with their prescribed drugs.
