Greetings!

Lots of rain streaming into the PNW... A line of storms extending to Hawaii are streaming up the Pineapple Express, and will be pounding our area for the next week or so... the PNW is under a flood watch.  6 to 8 inches of rain will fall in the next few days... things could get pretty interesting.  basically, the whole of Western Washington is under a flood warning.

Now THAT was a fast year!  Google might be doing something else... I guess I'm not the only one who's noticed... Well, he didn't blame Bush, at least... Hope and Change collides with reality -- the kid edition.

Hope everyone has a great day, and a great weekend!  Remember to do something fun!  Happy Friday!

Google is more about protecting the cloud than protecting freedom

Google made some hay the last couple of days by saying it was stopping it's part in censoring search results in order to placate Chinese authorities.  That might be true, but its stated reason of preserving the free flow of information probably isn't its biggest reason.

Google was successfully attacked and exploited.  Its gMail security was compromised, and it monitored the extraction of personal information by 'a source in China' about Chinese dissidents.  While that's not a secret, its also not being hung out there with the rest of the laundry.

Google is trying to get us to give up the hard drive.  It wants us to switch to the "ChromeOS", where your computer is simply a device that runs a browser, and the computing power is handled, along with the storage of whatever you're interacting with - pictures, programs, tax information, bank information... everything... is held in the "Cloud".  Google wants us to rent space, and rent the use of tools and services... and we won't do that if we don't think our stuff will be safe.  The cloud won't succeed unless we think its secure, and having China - or someone 'originating in China' hacking into Google's servers isn't going to help that cause.

So... its likely that Google will be cutting the virtual ties with China.  That means it won't help censor anything anymore... but it also means it can close the doors that the attackers used to get in, also.  I think that THAT is the real goal.

These guys said it much better than I just did - http://www.tnr.com/article/politics/gathering-clouds

It seems I'm not the only one who noticed...

President Bush was bashed hard and heavy by the Media, but he still held press conferences, and took the beatings head on... something that President Obama, apparently, isn't willing to do.

Well what do you know... he didn't blame Bush

So why is the government doing such a bad job??? Simple... its because they don't have snazzy computers to run it on.

White House budget director blames old computers for ineffective government
By Ian Swanson - 01/14/10 02:56 PM ET
A big reason why the government is inefficient and ineffective is because Washington has outdated technology, with federal workers having better computers at home than in the office.

This startling admission came Thursday from Peter Orszag, who manages the federal bureaucracy for President Barack Obama.

Sort of makes you wonder how it worked before computers were invented at all, eh?  Its also pretty telling that they admit to being innefective.
