September 28

TROPICAL DEPRESSION 14
A strong tropical wave exited the coast of Africa and quickly developed into a tropical depression.  It is the 14th tropical depression of the season.  Further development is likely, and it could become tropical storm Melissa later today.  It is expected to drift north east to north north east, and into the open waters of the Atlantic.

September 30 - Struggling, but named

Melissa continues to struggle against southwesterly wind shear, and has been downgraded to a remnant low. At 5 p.m. EDT, the center of Tropical Depression Melissa was located at 16.3 north and 34.0 west, or about 665 miles west of the Cape Verde islands. The storm is moving to the west-northwest at 14 mph.

Maximum-sustained winds have decreased 30 mph, and estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 mb, or 29.74 inches of mercury. The remains of Melissa will track northwestward across cooler waters of the eastern Atlantic, and redevelopment is unlikely.

September 30 - Torn apart and gone

Tropical Depression Melissa is rapidly becoming a remnant low in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Strong shearing winds that are battering and weakening the system have snuffed out thunderstorm production. Melissa should continue to move off to the west-northwest and dissipate early week. The final advisory has been issued.
