Dome Building 2006 - Continued Growth...
<<Back to Return To Dome Building

At the start of the year, the "Drumbeat" continues, with the Dome growing fast enough for Spiders placed on the new dome to move more than a meter a day on average!  The steady drum of small quakes is inturrupted periodically by a mag 2-3 quake, but otherwise, the mountain is fairly quiet.

For most of January, the mountain was obscured by winter clouds... it didn't make a showing until the 25th!

The first order of business for the USGS: clear the cameras of ice!

The day after Valentine's Day, there was an eruption of steam and ash...
The USGS had to replace its spiders, both due to battery replacement requirements, and to destruction by the eruption...
In March, a new feature, called the "Slab" began to emerge....
The Johnston Ridge Cam caught a nice blume billowing out of the crater... but, as you can see, had difficulty at times...
The view of Mt Adams from Mt St Helens' flanks is quite spectacular.
The glacier is getting squished aside by the growing dome...
This snowy view of Mt St Helens and Spirit Lake is incredible!
A LOT of snow fell this year!
The Shadow Lady and I went snow-shoeing up near the Mountain... it was a fun trip!
The drive up was real nice, and there were some new displays out, showing the effects of the new growth... 52 dump truck loads of rock in about 2 minutes... WOW!
It was great to be back up there...
The slab continues to extrude... you can see the fresh line at the bottom showing the extrusion since the last bout of bad weather, which was a few days before this picture was taken...
Spirit Lake.

The Snow covered logs are at the far end of the lake.

In April, a USGS trip went into the crater, and quite close to the dome...
The new slab is quite hot...
