St Helens Got a little busy for a while

Mt St Helens is a little more active recently than it has been in the previous couple of years...  but, its important to note that the strain energy before May 18, 1980, when it erupted, was 1000 times higher than it is now.

 
Earthquake activity at Mt St Helens over the last
dozen years or so... in 1998, it is thought that the
column of lava extending from the magma chamber
to the lava dome in the crater hardened, forming a
plug.  The immediate result of the plug is that the
lava dome, growing at about 100 feet a year until
then, stopped growing.  The long-term result is
that the plug sets the stage for the next eruption.
