2003 - 4th Avenue Bridge reopens in Olympia
<< Back
| This was the 4th Avenue bridge in 1998. Nearly 80 years old, it
was destroyed in the 2000 Nisqually Quake, and the city of Olympia
decided to build a bridge that retained the familiar character of the
old bridge, and use the "opportunity" to improve traffic flow in the
downtown area. |
 |
 |
The New bridge opened Christmas Weekend, and once everyone got
used to the new options, traffic within the city will be improved over
what it was with the old bridge. Along with the new bridge, a
revitalization project was undertaken to rejuvenate the downtown area.

 |
| Construction Spanned two years. Once the temporary bridge is
removed, and the project is cleaned up and completed, the area will
look quite nice, it seems. |
|
 |
To keep traffic flowing somewhat smoothly, a temporary bridge was
build to prevent an outright change of traffic "habit" which happened
a bit anyway...
Traffic on the 5th Ave Bridge greatly increased, as did reliance on
the highway to get to the "West Side" |
 |
 |
The new bridge will have basically the same lines as the old
bridge, but the deck will be wider and higher off the water. Traffic
on the west side of the bridge will also be routed over to Harrison,
which will relieve the residential 4th Ave of considerable amounts of
traffic. |
