1873: Mt Rainier Erupts

<< Back

On October 19, 1873, at about 4 o’clock p.m. “clouds of smoke were seen pouring from the highest peak of Mount Rainer [sic].” People continue observing the outpouring of smoke until clouds obscure the mountain near nightfall.

Earlier in the day, at 2 p.m., a slight earthquake had preceded Mount Rainier's eruption. It is unknown how long the volcanic eruption lasted because the following day the mountain was hidden in clouds.
