Here's a picture from the beginnings of Tacoma, taken in 1865...

The city of Tacoma was originally settled as "Commencement City" in
1852, which is when this cabin was built. In 1864, the city was
renamed Tacoma in difference to Mt Tacoma, which was later named Mt
Rainier, which it was named by Captain Vancouver, who "Discovered"
it... the local Native inhabitants, however, knew where it was all
along, and called it "Tahoma"... the settlers understood the
pronunciation to be "Tacoma".
I read in one history book that Tacoma changed its name shortly after
Seattle did, so that it, too, would have a connection with the local
populous, who at the time outnumbered the settlers, and could easily
threaten the fledgling communities. |
