1884: Biddeford Completes Water Treatment Plant

It is one of the first filtration plants in New England
Biddeford Water completes the construction of the original Treatment Facility in 1884.  This is different than waste water treatment: this plant treats water intended for drinking.

Throughout their 100 plus year history, Biddeford Water has always remained proactive, implementing the latest treatment techniques available in the water works industry to provide our customers with outstanding water quality.

Biddeford's Mayor poses in front of the newly acquired Biddeford Water Main Street Office, opened in 1884.

Below is the facility as it appeared around 1915. There are several significant features seen in this photo. The original Boiler Room roof was destroyed by fire in Feb, 1903. Secondly, note the disinfection chamber (clearwell) located off the end of the main facility (right side of the photo). And finally, note that the facility now has electric power (installed around 1902). Electricity was used primarily for lighting purposes. Coal was still being used to drive the large steam pumps as is evident by the plume rising from the chimney.
