1811 - Saco Academy Opens

Still open, as Saco's High School, now known as Thorton Academy

<< Back

Thorton Academy, named after Dr Thomas G. Thornton, a prominent Saco Doctor who donated $1000 to its opening.  The original name was the Saco Academy, and it has been a public institution since its opening.  The Academy's 10 buildings occupy 80 acres in Downtown Saco.

Yes, those are real icicles...

There are several newer buildings, which started to be added in 1955, with the latest in 1996, however, most of the Academy's buildings date back to the late 1800's, as in 1843, the Academy was burned by unknown arsonists, for a total loss.  After the fire, the academy remained closed until 1889.

Thorton Academy is one of the oldest academic institutions in New England.
