1811 - Saco Academy Opens
Still open, as Saco's High School, now known as Thorton Academy

| Thorton Academy, named after Dr Thomas G. Thornton, a prominent Saco
Doctor who donated $1000 to its opening. The original name was the
Saco Academy, and it has been a public institution since its opening.
The Academy's 10 buildings occupy 80 acres in Downtown Saco. |

| Yes, those are real icicles...
There are several newer buildings, which started to be added in 1955,
with the latest in 1996, however, most of the Academy's buildings date
back to the late 1800's, as in 1843, the Academy was burned by unknown
arsonists, for a total loss. After the fire, the academy remained
closed until 1889. |
