1692 - Ft Mary Established at Saco Falls

Vine's town, Saco, takes shape

<< Back

In 1692, as part of King William's War, Fort Mary was established in Saco Maine, at the top of Saco Falls, on the Biddeford Side of the falls.  It was built to protect the surrounding Regions and was was located by Massachusetts Governor William Phips.

Unfortunately, the site was obliterated by construction of mill.  There is note of the fort's foundations when the mills were being constructed, but no photographs were taken at the site.

The photograph is of Ft Henry, which was built in Pemaquid.  It is of the same design as Ft Mary.

The construction of these two Forts so worried the natives in the region that they sued for peace.
