ORION: Ares-1 Wind Tunnel Testing
  Verifying the Mathematical Models

A model of the integrated crew module and launch vehicle sits in one of four wind tunnel facilities used by NASA for a series of tests.

Engineers conduct wind tunnel testing in June, 2006, on a partial model of the Ares I launch vehicle that includes a portion of the upper stage, the spacecraft adapter, the Orion crew module and launch abort system.  This image was taken at wind speeds near 1.5 times the speed of sound.

A one-percent model of the integrated crew module and vehicle stack in the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at NASA's Langley Research Center.
