LONDON (April 11, 7:32 a.m. PDT) - A businessman
who attacked his own pub with a bulldozer after staff refused to serve him a
drink was sentenced Friday to 200 hours community service.
Robert Tyrrell also was ordered to pay $4,700 in compensation and court costs.
Tyrrell pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to demolishing part of the 16th
century North Star Inn in Steventon, 55 miles northwest of London, on New Year's
Day.
Photos showed the timbered building - described in a local guidebook as an
"outstanding unspoilt village local" - with collapsed roof and damaged walls.
News reports said it will cost up to $112,000 to repair the damage.
Prosecutors said Tyrrell, who owned the pub, attacked the building after staff
refused to serve him a drink after hours.
There were no injuries among the 16 people in the pub, who included Tyrrell's
son.
"New Year's morning was a disaster for you. It was by the grace of God it was
not a disaster for everyone else who was in the pub," said judge Julian Hall at
Oxford Crown Court.
