I was driving home on a grey Seattle day, and snapped some
pictures of Smith Tower on my cell phone...
Back in 1909, New York tycoon Lyman Cornelius Smith (Of
Smith-Corona typewriter lore) started building what was
going to be the tallest office building in the world outside
the city of New York. Standing at 42 floors, the
building towered over the rest of the "backwoods city", and
until the Golden Gate Bridge was built, it was the tallest
structure west of the Mississippi river. It was
erected without an injury or death to any of the
steelworkers, a testament to the company's focus on safety.

The distinct building still commands interest, and is very
much an icon of the city of Seattle
|
For a while, Ivar Haglund owned the building, and lived in
the floors in the pyramid at the top of the tower.

 |
 |
The building is very distinct, and carries an air not
present in modern buildings... it was built when it was more
of an art, than a job.
|
Its a building that nearly anyone from Seattle would
recognize... and one where you can say; "Only in Seattle".
