Sea Lion
Caves
<< BACK
| South of
Newport,
a series of caves have been
cut onto the cliffs by the pounding surf... A perfect home for thousands of
sea lions. Back in the 50's, a local businessman bored a hole down
into the caves, and people can now go down into the cave,
and see the sea lions in their own environment... unlike most
aquariums, its the HUMANS behind the barriers...
Outside the cave opening, hundreds of sea lions took
advantage of the sun... all the barking made quite the
ruckus! |

The two in the water seemed to be playing... they didn't
seem concerned in the least at being in a situation that
would really beat up a human pretty badly! Down inside the
cave, it was a whole different world... the first thing you
noticed was the smell, then it was the noise of all the
barking! |

 |
| Being in the cave is almost surreal... it looks almost
manufactured, but then you realize that except for the
elevator shaft you took to get down there... its a naturally
formed cave, and the sea lions came there on there own, and
have lived there for centuries... |

Once I got down there... I didn't want to leave! I had
to eventually, of course... but with the knowledge that I'll
be back! |
