Camp 18
<< BACK
| In Mist, Oregon, a
small town just off of Highway 26, there is a restaurant that has as its
theme a Logging Camp. Billed as both a museum and a quaint place to
eat, there is an outdoor display of large equipment of yesteryear, and the
inside is filled with various hand tools used by the men who tamed
Oregon. If you're ever near there, its worth a visit!
This steam powered logging tractor is an example of
how far this technology actually went. |

This log is a graphic reminder of just how large trees were
when the settlers arrived in the area... nearly every log was
this large - or larger! This was in the days before chain
saws, diesel engines, and modern logging equipment! Steam
Donkeys provided the power to move the timber... quite
impressive, when you think about it. |
 |
| These Steam Donkeys, or Skidders, often weighed more
than 4 tons. Large logs were cut, and were used as
runners, a sort of sled, which allowed it to drag itself out to
a yarder site.
Camp 18 uses this skidder and
the Yarder Pole to do demonstrations during the summer, on Sunday
afternoons. |

The equipment around the lot is quite interesting... it can
be a while before you even get into the place to eat! |
