The Wreck of the Peter Iredale
  < back to OR

During a storm in 1906, the Peter Iredale, a steel-hulled steam ship equipped with sails, lost its engines, and despite the crew's efforts, blew ashore and wrecked on the beach in Oregon, near Ft Stevens.  91 years later, in 1997, I visited the site, and the hulk is still there, rotting from the salt water.

Surprisingly, the iron has held up against subsequent storms and relentless pounding by the salt waters of the Pacific.

This is what it looked like in 1910, 4 years after it wrecked.

It has been quite the attraction for more than a century now.

I've only seen the wreck twice, and the pictures I have are scanned from 'real' pictures... so I'm due for a trip back!

Not much is left... they'll be a day when nothing remains but the memory.

But, for now, its an interesting reminder that we aren't fully in control, even if we want to think we are.

Every time I see these pictures, I know I need to go back for more!
