Biddeford's Library moved into its current home in 1902.
Formerly a church built some 50 years before, the library has
had only one expansion.I used to go to the library all the
time when I was growing up... nearly every day. I'd read
whatever interested me, and use that to move on to another
topic, or find more about it... sort of a 'manual internet'. |

The tan, almost sand-colored walls, were turning pink with age
when I was a student going there to study, some 25 years
ago... they're much pinker now. My first programming job was
here in the Library. I wrote a library inventory
application that also managed the membership cards. Back
in 1982, Biddeford's Library had the ability to digitally
search, check out, and manage books. It could even print
postcard reminders for books that were late...
The picture above the door where I worked was still hanging
there... its amazing! Bob, the head librarian, isn't
there anymore, but I found his picture in the archives... |

Since I was there... I looked through some of the old photo
books, and made some copies for my history pages... what a
blast that was!!!
Pictures tell an amazing story... and how cool is it to see
the first "Safety Bike" in Biddeford? Or the old vault
in the City Hall Bank? Or an old ice house operation on
the Saco, near where Rotary Park is now?
Or, even more amazingly, an oxcart passing a speed limit
sign at 5-Points intersection??? |
