Everyone who knows me knows that I like to take pictures.
Here's the pictures that got it all started... A hobby
that has lasted a lifetime was born on this road trip.
In 1975, My mom took us on a trip with our church to Canada to
stay for a week at the New Brunswick Bible Institute, which was a converted
dairy farm. They were hosting a series of speakers, and a
revival of sorts.
She got me a camera just before the trip, I think for my
Birthday, a 110 instamatic that looked like a 'real' camera... these
are the pictures I took on that trip... once I got them back, I was
a bit disappointed that they were blurry, but some of them came out
fairly usable, and I ended up keeping 4 of them. But, the
far-reaching aspect of it all was that I was hooked forever!
| To me, getting there was an adventure in itself. I
hadn't traveled hardly at all up to that point, so this was
my first real trip outside the state... well, not counting
the White Mountain trips my Grampa would take us on... but
that was New Hampshire, so it doesn't count. I remember
parts of the trip like it was yesterday, and I want to go
back that way some time... mostly, to see "the bridge".
This bridge, in my memory, took us into Canada, but its
actually a considerable distance into Canada itself,
crossing into the town of Hartland... the sign above the
opening says that its the longest covered bridge in the
world at 1282 feet. |

To the right is an overview of the compound that made up the
transformed farm. NBBI was a school for preachers... as
far as I know, anyway... for the meeting that we went to,
they had preachers and evangelists from all over the place,
teaching. It was fun!
The main auditorium for the church was a half-round
building, formerly the dairy barn for the farm. I
remember the building as being VERY large!
I made some friends at the week-long event... the little
girl is labeled "Jennifer", and that's my sister Tammy in
the black dress running up the hill. |

Not much to look at, I know... but these pictures are the
some of the ones that started me taking pictures... My Uncle
planted the seed by letting me watch him take some pictures,
then he let me help develop the film. Once I had taken some pictures
of my own, I was hooked forever!
|
| After scanning the pictures and building this page, I
decided to check and see if NBBI was still around... and
surprisingly enough, it is! They even have a
website.
They're still doing the same thing they were, it seems...
Also, in some of the pictures on their website, it seems
that the big 'barn' still stands... almost 30 years, and not
much has changed.
Its been re-shingled... they were put on diagonally
before, and they were a greenish color. |

| Continuing to explore, I Googled
"Heartland, NB covered bridge", and found that the bridge is
still standing, according to
The
Town of Heartland's website.
The bridge was built in 1899, and tradition has it that
you're supposed to stop halfway across, and kiss the person
you're with...
