Iceland: The Food we ate.
< Back to Iceland

Before we left for Iceland, we looked at some recipes that were "Icelandic", and some of them had us a bit worried ("Rancid Shark," anyone?)...  So we sort of kept a log of the food we actually did eat.  In all, it wasn't so bad as it could have been.

The Shadow Lady really liked the orange drink.  There were two kinds: this one, and some other locally produced brand that was supposed to be better.  We saw the plant that made the stuff, but not the drink itself anywhere.

This was pan fried monk fish, a vegetable salad, and some sort of mint sauce, piled on rice.

It was pretty good, actually.  I was surprised a bit to see corn in with the veggies... Europeans aren't really big on corn, from what I noticed... they treat it as feed for livestock.

This is a Digestive Cookie, stamped with an Icelandic word, and Reykjavik... it had a Oreo-esque filling between the wafers, and it was quite good.  I'm assuming it was good for you, too.  They served it at breakfast.

THIS was good.

The sign outside said "You HAVE to try our Authentic Icelandic Lamb Soup", so we went inside and obeyed.

It was GOOD!  Lots of Lamb, potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli, garlic, corn... I think I got it all.  I could have eaten this all day!  The broth was awesome... the bread was perfect for sopping up the last bit left in the bowl!

A chicken salad, from room service at the hotel.

A bit fancy, but very good.  The chicken is buried under the veggies.  What I liked about it is that there wasn't much in the way of Lettuce.  greens, most of which were pretty typical, but all of it very tasty!

Lox, eggs, and a salad, with sour cream and ranch dressing.

This was from the room service at the hotel too.  Again, a bit fancy, but very good.

The sauce was awesome!  The salmon was great!

Oh, Yeah!  Coke and ice cream...

The ice cream was GREAT!  Very rich and very nicely flavored... "comfort food"!  :-)

This was as good as it looks!

They sure have the ice cream thing down PAT... I don't know where the blueberries came from - seems like it'd be perfect weather for them in Iceland, so maybe they're local... but man, they were fresh, sweet, and filled with goodness...

This was Monk Fish Stew.

It had the consistency of Mashed Potatoes, with fish bits in it.  It was VERY good.  It was on some dark bread that also was very good.  I'd do this one again... it was great.

I read in one site describing the food in Iceland that the Hot Dogs, at least, were good.  That person said that that's all he ate after a few days...

They were pretty much the same as you'd get here... the toppings were great, too.  I felt weird plopping down 2,000 "bucks" for it, though!

This is what we got at Subway.  It was EXACTLY the same as in the States, although the Coke Light tasted more lemony than in the US... Coke "localizes" the flavor, so wherever you go, it'll taste just a bit different

This is "Crispy Fried" monk fish, with potatoes and onions, and a bowl of mushroom soup.

It was pretty good... I really like Monk Fish.  I'd eaten it before, but not as often as I did in Iceland.

I ate sheep's head, too... if you're so inclined, you can check that interesting fact out on a page set aside just for that particular delight... Its not very pretty, though.
