2005.09.04-05 - Labor Day Weekend
< Back to Trips

I went camping with the "Shadow Lady" and her family for Labor Day Weekend.

Well, we left for the campsite in Kalaloch, Washington on Sunday, after church, so I guess we went camping for Labor DAY, Technically... :-)

Gas prices, with the whole "Katrina" thing, have been going up... this trip marked my first time paying more than $3 for gas... ugh!

The trip was nice... down through Olympia, over to Aberdeen, up through Lake Quinault, and over to the coast to Kaloch...

The drive north of Aberdeen is a very pleasant country drive... There were a few showers here and there, but for the most part, the weather sported blue skies, and at times the clouds were quite interesting... We even got a picture of a "Shark".

Recent harvesting made the view of Lake Quinault pretty amazing...

We got to the Olympic National Park area, north of the Quinault Indian Reservation, and quickly found our campground and then went out to the beach for the sunset... which was pretty impressive.

That's when I noticed Destruction Island, and the lighthouse that's out there on it... I HAVE to come back with my 'good' camera!

After that, we sat around the fire, ate, and visited with "The Cousins"... there wasn't a specific topic or anything... we basically went along with the conversation as a whole.

Around midnight-ish, everyone knocked off.

During the night, a racoon enjoyed some chips outside my tent  I thought about shooing him off, but figured it didn't much matter - we had WAY too much stuff, and wouldn't miss whatever it would eat very much...

Sunrise was quite beautiful as well... and it came with promise of a great day!

After Breakfast, which we were 'in charge' of, came the 'ceremonial dousing of the fire'... another year where the fire did not go out from the time it was lit.

From there, we went to Ruby Beach, for a day out on the sand with the remainder of the Family, who didn't camp, but came out for the day at the beach.

Living in the Pacific Northwest, you get a bit more familiar with geology than folks from other parts of the country might... the Juan de Fuca subduction zone is right off the coast... about 7 miles off shore from where we were... Tsunamis are a bit of a threat..."If you feel an earthquake... head for high ground..."

Ruby beach is AWESOME!  Its a great sandy beach, with lots of stacks scattered about that add to the scenery... its quite amazing.  We were there during high tide... during the low tides, there are lots of tide pools to check out!

The beach is closer to Destruction Island, and the view of the lighthouse, even with my "little" camera, is quite impressive.

Everyone set up for food, fun and games... while that was going on, I went out to where I thought the high tide line was, and started building a sand castle with the kids...

I was wrong, though... while we were eating, the waves came, and took my mound away...

After eating, I started over... the kids dug a trench in front of the mound, to help the ocean come in and retake the mound... it ended up that the waved didn't need any help... my mound was once again overrun...
So, we went for a walk on the beach instead, and took in the amazing scenery!

I really love the pacific Northwest!

When I got back, I rebuilt the mound, a bit smaller, and started cutting the castle... unfortunately, I didn't have time to finish... It was coming out pretty good, though... the sand was fantastic!
Before we left, we talked someone into taking our cameras, and snapping pictures of all of us...

Unfortunately, my camera over-exposed the picture a bit...

While I was carrying the cooler back up to the parking lot, I took a break, turned around into the breeze, and was treated to a great 'last look' at the beach...

It was a great end to an awesome holiday... I had made it through my "first Labor Day" holiday with the Shadow Lady's family... :-)
