| Nov 13-14, 2004 - A Stay at Ocean Shores (Part 2 of 3) | ||
|
< Back to Trips Once in Long Beach, the "real" fun began... after checking into the hotel,
I made up a plan - go downtown and see what I could see spend the day on
the beach. I'm not one for "fun in the sun", but since I was
there, I decided to make the best of it. |

| Part 2 -Out on the beach, and a busy night for Clammers | ||
|
Once I got there, I quickly signed in to the hotel, and then headed out
onto the beach. The view from our hotel overlooked the roadway to the beach, which, along with most Washington beaches, can be driven on. The dunes on Ocean Shores are slowly eroding, as the prevailing currents have changed direction from South to North. This happened quite some centuries ago, but with the various jetties and breakwaters directing the silt away from the beaches, the process of erosion has been considerably quickened. |

I stayed in the Best Western Lighthouse Inn... Its a nice hotel, right on
the beach. It sports a "lighthouse" observation deck, which give it its namesake... |

| Our first stop after checking in was up in the Lighthouse observation deck... The views were quite nice... although, the views of the beach weren't much different than our room, which was on the 4th floor. |

After that, I went through town, to see what was still open for the winter.

It was fun seeing what the sea left behind, and outrunning the occasional
rouge wave...
The Gulls were there en masse, taking razor clams that were washed onto the surface by the surf. Not knowing about the 2 day clamming window, I marveled at how many people were on the beach... |

The waves showed the effects of recent storms... with the cooling water temperatures, kelp forests off shore thinned out, much like leaves on trees are dropped, and the remnants could be seen in the surf, darkening it in some places...
| There was obviously lots of food, though... the gulls were having a feast! |

I also saw a good number of deer... I guess they knew there was no hunting in town!

I drove around the Spit, and noticed that some of the neighborhoods were
named after the Monopoly Game...
I also couldn't resist the opportunity to climb out on the breakwater... The waves there were pretty impressive... |

Across the inlet, on the South Spit, the Westport Lighthouse could bee
seen, lighting the way for shipping into the harbor...
Almost before I realized it, night was upon us... after eating in "Waves" the hotel's lounge, I went back to my room. Out on the beach, it almost looked like it was 4th of july or something... as far as you could seen up and down the beach, there were cars, and lights, and lots of people. They were going after the last opportunity to clam for Razor Clams. |
