A Great Sunday Drive

<< BACK

A great drive to take out of the Seattle area is State Route 20.  The route takes you through the Cascade Mountain Range, and the majority of that portion of the scenic roadway takes you though the North Cascades National Park .  Fill with breathtaking scenery, the park is home to more glaciers than any other park in the lower 48 states... even more than the Glacier National Park, in Montana.

A chance to show off the truck
Soon after entering the Cascade Foothills, you are treated to a waterfall along the side of the road.  Steep cuts and cavern are the norm along the route.

Narrow Bridge
This bridge has one-lane, and fits in very well with the surrounding scenery.

WAY up there!
This bridge (not the same one as above) spans a DEEP gully... the 'bump' to the right of the stream is my shadow!  I'm guite a ways up there, and since the entire structure is metal grating, its quite unnearving!

Glacially Fed Lake
This lake's water has a greenish tint, caused by deposits left by glacier run-off.  A large portion of the rock formations in the area around the lake is Green Schist, which is softer than the Granite and erodes quicker, which tints the lake.

Beautiful Scene
The overlooks along the highway are quite impressive!

The Rugged Northwest
I don't know about everyone, but when I think of the Pacific Northwest, scenes such as this come to mind... This was taken at a turnout along the route... scenes like this are everwhere!

Crater Peak
Volcanic activity is everywhere in the Cascades.  This is a good example of the scenery that awaits the traveler... surprisingly, its not a very crowded route.
