Mayr Brothers Ponds Hatchery and Rearing Pond

"Long Live the Kings"... an interesting name for a 30-year old Salmon (King Salmon, presumably) program that is jointly sponsored by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Grays Harbor County, Department of Energy, the city of Aberdeen, a private organization ("Long Live the Kings"), and the Mayr Brothers Logging Company.  They hope to eventually establish a network of hatcheries in Grays Harbor that will release a million fish a year into the local rivers, still only a fraction of what once teemed in the rivers of the county.

The Mayr Brothers Ponds hatchery, in the Wishkah Watershed, is the first Hatchery created under this project, currently rears fingerlings in a couple of ponds on the property.  They capture wild salmon returning to spawn, incubate and rear the eggs, and winter them in the large ponds.  They are released in the spring into the Wishkah.

When we visited the Hatchery, the most visible pond was drained, I guess it'll be filled for the wintering of the fingerlings, which would still be in the tanks behind the buildings in the facility.

In 2006, the program released 30,000 Chinook, 200,000 chum, and 300,000 coho salmon... pretty impressive numbers.

In addition to these types of facilities, river improvements such as log jams were added, to provide additional habitat.

It seems like a good program.
