Lake Sylvia State Park
<< BACK

One of the gems of the Montesano, Washington, area is Lake Sylvia State park.

Built on the property of an old Logging Camp, the park has 15,000 feet of freshwater shoreline.

In the park there's assorted displays of old logging gear.  Its used primarily as a Day Use park, although there's camping facilities as well.

The park is built around the lake.  No motorized boats are allowed in the lake.

The lake was built by the timber company as a Mill Pond.  When logging ceased in 1930, the dam was used to generate electricity for the town of Montesano.

In 1936, Montesano donated the land to the State Parks Comission.

One of the park's attractions is "the big ball".  In its day as a logging camp, the ball provided entertainment for the loggers, who would race across the lake, running on the ball.

It was carved from a single tree in 1925.  At some point, it became waterlogged and sunk, and was forgotten save for a few pictures that showed it in use.  It was rediscovered in 1974 when the lake was being cleaned from the debris of years of logging and neglect., and serves as a lasting reminder of the time when the park's grounds served as the working home of loggers in need of entertainment.

While walking around the park, I noticed I was under observation...

Lake Sylvia has 5 miles of trails, and its an excellent place to host a get-together...
