Lake Aberdeen Hatchery
<< BACK

Close to Aberdeen, WA, is Lake Aberdeen, and the Lake Aberdeen Hatchery.

Lake Aberdeen is a man-made lake, formed when an earthen dam was installed to help control flooding.

The hatchery primarily raises Steelhead, the "official game fish" of Washington.

The fish remain in the hatchery for two years, where they are about the size of your hand.  After release, they return to the hatchery after 2-3 years, and generally make 2-3 trips back to the hatchery before they die, which is normally after their second or third spawning run.

There are two distinct sizes of fish... those who be released at the end of the summer are about as big as your hand... those that were spending their first summer in the hatchery were about as big as your finger.

Walking around the hatchery was a little bit creepy, because the fish, trained to know that "the big animals walking around have food", would swim, in unison, quickly to your end of the tank they were in, churning up the water as they came... it sort of felt like "The Birds", almost.
