Westport Lighthouse
The Guardian of Grays Harbor
|
|
| << BACK | |
| On the outskirts of the small town of Westport, Washington, which sits on the South Jetty of Gray's Harbor, stands one of the better maintained lighthouses in the region... |

The lighthouse is basically surrounded by trees, and the top of the
light tower is green... almost a sort of disguise, which, to me, is
somewhat odd.

Built in 1897, the lighthouse has helped guide ships into Gray's
Harbor for more than 100 years. Standing at 107 feet, it is the tallest lighthouse in Washington, and the second tallest on the West Coast. When it was built, it stood only 400 feet from the water... currently its more than 3000 ft from the beach, due to buildup from sediments flowing out of the harbor it protects. |

From the top of the dune at the head of the beach, the distance to
the lighthouse from the water is quite apparent... there's a trail
that leads from the beach to the tower, as well as access (by foot)
from a nearby roadside viewing platform.

The lighthouse is beautifully maintained, and definitely worth the
short walk to get to it! One thing I found interesting, was the artwork around the platform in front of the tower... from older pictures, it seems that this platform used to be a support building... I don't know what happened to it, or when it was removed. This is a lighthouse that I definitely will return to! |
