Point Wilson Lighthouse
One of the few still manned by the Coast Guard

Just on the edge of the town of Port Townsend, there's a fairly
sizable spit called Point Wilson. Fort Warden, an old Naval
Artillery Post, occupies most of the Spit, but its open to the
public now. Sharing real estate with the old Fort is the Point Wilson Lighthouse. The Keepers building used to house the original tower, which grew out of its roof. A fire in 1913 changed this, and the tower structure was built, and remains to this day. The lighthouse was automated in 1976, but it is still closed to the public, being maintained and operated by the US Coast Guard. |

While technically it IS a coastal light, it is near the mouth of the
Puget Sound, and not part of the Oceanic Coast, which is why the
light is not nearly as tall and rugged of a typical coastal light. Basically the highest point in the area, the keepers quarters' roof is a favorite resting place for local birds, as indicated by the droppings... |

From a passing ferry, the lighthouse is VERY prominent on the point,
and an excellent aid in navigation even with today's sophisticated
equipment.

In the shadow of the lighthouse, the beach along the spit makes for an excellent outing, to fly a kite, or explore what nature has to offer... |
|
Maintained as part of a US Coast Guard Station, the lighthouse and
its support buildings are kept in very good condition. One odd element to the light is that it blinks red... |

A large navigational radar station adjoins the complex grounds,
towering over the light. Point Wilson Light is an excellent day trip destination, and the spit around the light is an excellent stop to enjoy a sunny day on the beach! |
