Washington has its fair share of Lighthouses... about a dozen or
so. One that's particularly nice to visit is North Head, which is in
Ft Canby State Park, down in the South West corner of the state, near the
Columbia River.
The picture on the left was taken in 1900... one can only imagine what the light has seen since that time! The light used to be a 4th Order Frensel lens, but it was replaced with a rotating searchlight in the early 1940's.

Heading down to the Lighthouse usually means a trip
through Astoria... and that means a stop at Pier 11, my favorite
restaurant here in the Pacific Northwest. The food is great, and out on the pier over the water, the view matches... |

Its part of a refurbished feed store, and it once was used to restock fishermen on their way out to catch a load of fish. |

From Astoria, you take the Astoria Bridge into Washington... 4 miles long, it crosses the Columbia River
Estuary, and links Washington with Oregon. Depending on the time of day, or the weather, each trip across the bridge is an opportunity to see something different. |

Lewis and Clark ended their trek west at the mouth of the Columbia,
just down the river a bit from Astoria. A monument of sorts has been erected on the site where the "Corps of Discovery" camped for a few days, in a vain attempt to wait out the rain. |

After you drive through Illwaco, you enter Illwaco, and Ft Canby,
which is where the lighthouse is. Once in the parking lot, its a short walk down a trail along the head, and you're presented with an awesome view of the Pacific Ocean, and the North Head Lighthouse. |

North Head is considered the third windiest location in the country... you can see the beating the trees on Beard's Head have taken in the wind, and how that has shaped them. |

With the wind, the wind chill factor can make it feel quite cold.

The lighthouse is one of the more beautiful on the Washington Coast, in my Opinion... |
