Yaquina Head Lighthouse
<< BACK
| Standing on one of the most inhospitable
places on the Oregon Coast sits a very majestic
lighthouse... Yaquina Head. The light house actually was
supposed to be built on the next large head to the north,
but the transport ship carrying equipment dropped its load
on Yaquina Head, and the mistake became one of the more
prominent Oregon Lighthouses. |

Up close, the Lighthouse is quite
incredible...
Built in 1873, the brick tower has withstood countless
storms, shining its first order Frensel lens brightly,
guiding mariners towards the safety of Newport's harbor.
The head is difficult to mariners, that at sometime in
the past, a lighthouse keeper cut hand-holds in the face of
the head, to assist shipwrecked sailors in climbing up to
safety. |

 |
| Beautiful in its ruggedness, the lighthouse
stands in the face of some of the most violent weather on
the west coast. The head is also home to several Sea
Gulls, which use the site to nest... something you don't see
every day...
The coast's roughness in the area shows just how tough
the weather can be... |

 |
The lighthouse's lines are stunning... its a
very elegant structure... |
 |
 |
 |
| Did you notice the moon's reflection in the
window??? |
 |
Yaquina is one of those places that no matter how long you
stay, its not long enough, and no matter how many times you
see it, it looks different. In my humble opinion, Yaquina
head is the most impressive lighthouse in the Pacific
Northwest, and the most memorable... |
