Yaquina Bay Lighthouse
Standing the Test of Time
<< BACK
Yaquina Bay lighthouse is an example of a success story of the local chapter of the US Lighthouse Association... The lighthouse was in near ruin, but has been carefully restored by chapter members... and has even been lit again.
Originally, the lighthouse was only active a few years, from 1871 to 1874.  Yaquina Head Lighthouse, a few miles away, was built on the wrong location, and that mistake rendered the Yahquina Bay Light redundant.

It spent about 100 years in private hands, serving as a house, a coast guard lookout, a beach cabin, and an abandoned building, until 1974, when it was bought by the Lighthouse Association's local chapter, and restored.

Its light was relit in 1998.

Inside the lighthouse is a mini-museum of sorts...  This wasn't the original light, but it is the same make and model that was installed... a standard Coast Guard Light is now in its place.

The restoration was truly amazing, and it makes you feel good about being a member of the association, that's for sure!
