Tillamook Rock Light House
Diamond in the rough of things
<< BACK

Tillamook Rock Light House is the most remote lighthouse in Oregon.  It sits on a basalt outcropping just off the Oregon Coast, off shore from Ecola State Park, which is just to the north of Cannon Beach, Oregon.

The lighthouse, with its 62 foot light tower, is 133 feet above the waves. Construction took 3 years, and the station was completed in 1881.  Sadly, in 1957, it was replaced by a buoy.

The story is that the first surveyor on the island was swept off into the ocean shortly after landing, never to be seen again... waves consistently sweep over the island, and keeper logs note that 100+ pound boulders have crashed through the windows and ceiling of the structures.

The lighthouse really sets the scene at Cannon Beach, visible even from Haystack Rock, although its not much more than a bump on the horizon at that distance...

As you head further north, however, the view of the light station is vastly improved.

While the view from Cannon Beach is impressive, The best place to get a good view of the light house is to visit Ecola State Park, which is at the North end of Cannon Beach.
Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is one of those places where you just know you'll be back for a better look...
