Cape Elizabeth Light - Cape Elizabeth, ME

<< BACK

My grandfather and I would spend many a day eating ice cream while sitting in a small parking lot at the base of a jetty basically in the shadow of Cape Elizabeth Light.

The light station was first established in 1828, but the stone towers could not hold up to Maine's winters, so they were replaced in 1874 with cast Iron towers.

The light at Cape Elizabeth is the brightest in Maine.

Called "Two Lights" by the locals, Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse is one of the rare light houses that originally had two towers, which allowed mariners to better gauge the distance to the shoreline.

The second light was removed, but the tower remained, and was used during WW2 as a submarine observation tower.

The beaches around the lighthouse are rocky, eroded sandstone, petrified beaches from a long time ago.

This is a light house I return to a lot when I visit Maine... there's a lot of fond memories associated with the picturesque light station.
