This tower was installed in 195, after a ship ran around on an
outcropping of rocks called Ram Island Ledge, in the middle
of Portland's Harbor. It was previously protected with
a buoy. The granite tower is 72 feet tall, and it sports a
300mm searchlight lens. The pier for the keepers
access way still stands, a testament to the rugged
conditions on the ledge. |

This lighthouse is probably one of the most visible, yet one
of the most overlooked lighthouses in the US... It even gets
airbrushed out of pictures sometimes! |
|
It is so badly treated because its granite construction, and
difficult location to do maintenance has left it with 100
years of exposure showing, and it happens to be in the
'view' of one of the most cherished lighthouses in the
country... Portland Head Light. But, to me, the little
gray tower has a beauty all of its own... |

Even with the limited angle you have to view it... it looks
different somehow every time. On some days, you can see
another, offshore lighthouse in the distance... its a treat
of sorts, I guess. |
