Covered bridges were primarily built because wooden planks
were used on bridges, and horses, the primary means of
locomotion, would spook on the odd sounding roadway, unless
it was covered, then they'd think it was a barn, and it'd be
no big deal to them. In 1905, a bridge was built across
the Grays River, providing a more reliable method of
crossing the river than the ford, which you can see in the
foreground of the picture below. |

The bridge is the oldest bridge in continuous use in
Washington. Its the only historic covered bridge still in
use, actually. |

This bridge links the present with the past, it captures the
imagination... pioneers used this very same bridge I drove
across....
