Aurora Street Bridge - Seattle, WA
<< BACK
Seattle's George Washington Memorial Bridge, commonly known as
the Aurora Bridge, was dedicated in February 1932. The
bridge spans Lake Union between the Fremont and Queen Anne
neighborhoods.
The bridge is part of Aurora Highway, which in turn forms
part of U.S. Highway 99, a north-south thoroughfare that
extends from Canada to Mexico.

The bridge is 2,945 feet long and 70 feet wide, and stretches
167 feet above the waters of Lake Union. It was designed by
Jacobs & Ober for the Washington State Highway Department,
and was the first major highway bridge built in Seattle. It
is a structural steel cantilever bridge which has a steel
superstructure supported on reinforced concrete piers. The
piers are embedded in the bedrock below Lake Union. |

The view from the bridge is awesome sometimes... weather
depending, of course! |

There's a troll under the bridge... In an effort to
spruce up the neighborhood, the city commissioned a local
artist to dress up the underside of the bridge... I'm not
normally a fan of "art"... but I actually like this one!
Yes, that's a real VW Beetle under his hand....
