Saco River Bridge, Conway, NH

Back to Bridges

This bridge was built in 1890, and its construction opened the way for farmers to get their products to the market on an economically viable route, which made the bridge an extremely valuable resource.

Today, the bridge still spans the river, and it remains an important part of the community as a whole.

Amazingly enough, the bridge hasn't changed much over the years, as evidenced by the photo taken in 1895.

Constructed at a cost of $4000, the bridge is 224'9" long with clear spans of 103'4" and 95'4". It has an overall width of 30'4" with a roadway width of 18'3" and a minimum vertical clearance of 13'7". It is posted for six tons... pretty impressive for a bridge built more than a century ago.
