Pictures of the Month for 2008 |
< Back
This is the 9th
Year I've been picking the Monthly Pic... time sure flies!Since I started this section, it's been
one of my favorites! I take a LOT of pictures!
Probably enough to be considered "weird" to some, but that's
OK. Every so often, I get lucky -- I'm in the right
place at the right time -- and I get a good one... or at
least one that stands out to me as "among the best".
I try and put those here.
Some months, its tough to pick "the one"
- especially when I haven't really done anything or went
anywhere exciting... but I'll try and
put the better pictures on this page.
Some of you have said I was a month behind, but that's just because the picture
is from the month before... I can't post a month's "best pic" until the month is
over... :-)

Seattle Skyline |
On a very rare sunny winter day, the Shadow Lady and I
decided to take advantage of the afternoon, and go on a
ferry ride across the Sound to enjoy the view.On the way
back, we managed to catch the "Sunset Run", which is my
favorite time to ride the ferry! We were treated to an
AWESOME view of the city, back-dropped by the Cascades.
It was one of those views that make you feel good.

Fort Clinch |
I went to Florida to visit with my cousins there.
While mostly it was a trip to have a Family Meeting of
sorts, we also took some time to have some fun, and part of
that was a stop at Ft Clinch State Park, near Jacksonville.
Completed in 1864, the Fort was built and manned by the
North throughout the war.
The huge cannons of the Main Battery were quite
impressive, and the container ship sailing into
Jacksonville's port seemed to line up perfectly for the
shot.

Snow-covered Valley |
Its Spring here in the Pacific Northwest, but you'd
hardly know it!
Toward the end of March, we were treated to a reminder
that no matter what it says on the calendar, Winter isn't
quite over...
The snowy trees on the ridge across the street made for a
GREAT scene, seemingly tailor-made for our window in the
living room!
I sure do love living near the mountains!

Twin Falls, near the upper end of the Snoqualmie
River Valley |
On a hike to the Twin Falls from Olalie State Park, we
enjoyed this scene for a bit before turning back. We
had hiked up to these falls a year or so before, and this
had been our turn-around point then also, which is why we
chose this point to head back to the Mariner. The spot
marks the upper end of the Snoqualmie River Valley, and is
only a few miles from our house... it seems we'll likely be
hiking in these parts more often than we have been, since
its so close to home.
With scenes like this, though, I don't think I'll mind
too much.

Snowmelt run-off thundering over Snoqualmie Falls |
After a stretch of heavy rain, which was snow above 2,500
feet, the temperature rose up into the upper 80's, and the
snow line shot up above 7,000 feet. The combination
made for a considerable amount of run-off from the melting
snow, and since the ground was saturated already from the
rain, the Snoqualmie River swelled, making for a nice scene
at the falls!
The mist from the falls quickly evaporated, cooling the
air around it, creating a sort of natural air
conditioning... it was pretty nice!

A rare thunderstorm in the foothills. |
We hadn't had rain for a while, and when a cold front
rolled over a wetter-than-average air mass, the warm air
rose into the cooler upper air, and that allowed some pretty
respectable thunderstorms to bloom.
I broke out my camera, and pointed it in the direction of
the activity, and hoped I'd catch one... what I got was
pretty cool!

California Sunset |
We went down to a cousin's wedding in LA. I went
outside to get some air during the reception, and got to
enjoy this awesome sunset.
Not sure if it was smog or fog, but the haze over the
water seemed to shimmer, almost glowing in the waning
sunlight... it was a pretty stunning effect, and the camera
seemed to have missed it a bit, unfortunately.

The View from Kalaloch Lodge |
This view welcomes folks to a new morning at Kalaloch
Lodge, on the Washington Coast.
The Kalaloch River flows into the Pacific right in front
of the lodge, providing the setting for a great beach scene.
Its one of those places where the more you sit and watch,
the more you see. Its a place you can get lost in the
moment... and those places are my favorite.

Evening Twilight |
I REALLY like where I live -- this picture was taken from
my front porch as I was doing the final checks before
locking up.
Jupiter shines brightly, while the moon is blocked behind
a cloud, just as the last bit of light of the setting sun
was lighting up the sky.
What a great view!

Smoke on the water |
During a walk with the little guy just as the sun was
setting (so it was around 3 or so in the afternoon), the
temperature dropped just enough to cause a fog to start
forming.
As I watched, the fog slowly just appeared, and drifted
across the lake. It was very peaceful!
10 minutes later, it was just foggy. I happened to
be there at just the right time!

Icy Snoqualmie Falls |
It doesn't get real cold very often... but we had a 8-day
stretch where it didn't get above freezing.
On the way home, we decided to swing by Snoqualmie Falls,
to check out how they fared in the cold weather.
We were treated to an awesome view of a very wintry
scene!
