Pictures of the Month for 2006
< Back

I guess it goes without saying that I take a lot of pictures.  Either I get lucky, or the sheer volume dictates that a COUPLE come out nice, every so often one will stand out from the others... I'll try to put those here.

Some of you have said I was a month behind, but that's just because the picture is from the month before... I can't post a month's "best pic" until the month is over... :-)

December
  An AWESOME Sunrise over Seattle

A couple of days after The Windstorm of 2006, there was a break in the clouds that allowed the early morning sun to snake through the clouds, and light up the city. A million people without power burned a lot of wood to stay warm, and the smoke from all the fires hung low across the Puget Sound, catching the rays of the Sun and enhancing the colorful hues of the morning.

It was an awesome start to the day, that's for sure!
November
  Storm Clouds over Lake Washington

On the way home from work, I saw this shot of a storm cloud dumping its load on the ground below, while blue skies still prevailed.

It was a precursor to a night of snow and ice rain in the low lands, which really set the news organizations in a flurry, but didn't really affect the Seattle area very much.

It made for a really nice view, though!

October
Shades of New England in the PNW

This could have been taken right out of a New England Travel journal!
On our drive back from a trip around the Cascade Loop, with a stop in Leavenworth, we took a break to take in the scenery, and were treated to this great view along the Skykomish River.

September
  Windy Sunset

Driving home from Spokane after a Promise Keepers Conference, I was treated to this AWESOME sunset scene...

The windmills were spinning silently in the breeze, which added to the serenity of it all... it was one of the better sunsets that I've had the opportunities to witness.

August
  Strokker

This is the geyser Strokker, in Iceland, just as an eruption begins.

Strokker started erupting about 800 years ago and has erupted every 10 to 15 minutes or so since then.

The pool shimmers, and its depth bounces up and down a few times, then it goes smooth... Then, the center wells up into a mound, which is weird for water, if you ask me.  Very soon afterward, the pressurized steam roils up through the mound, and explodes out into a stream of hot water... its pretty impressive!

July
  Alpine Lakes

The Shadow Lady and I went on a hike up in Chinook Pass in mid-July, which is a bit early in the season for that area - the snow pack still isn't melted away yet.

The annual melting of the snow has created several lakes and ponds that form in the high mountain plateaus that dot the ridges and saddles up in the Pass... making for some incredible scenery!

June
  An Alki Sunset

While bringing the Shadow Lady home, I saw the sky, and got to thinking that the sunset would be a nice one...  So I took a detour and was rewarded with an awesome view...

This anchor weighs in at 4400 pounds, and was left behind by some unknown sailing ship at some point after the early 1800's, when the Sound was discovered by European and American explorers and settlers.  It was discovered in the 1950's by the Northwest Diving Association, and was recovered and placed here as part of Seattle's Maritime Heritage.

May
  St Augustine Lighthouse

This is the view from St Augustine Lighthouse when looking over the rail!

You really can get a feel for the height the 218 steps to the top of the light tower carry you to!

The lighthouse is one of the more recognizable lights on the East Coast, and was a highlight of our trip to Jacksonville.

April
  Opening Day

OK, this might not be the most fantastic picture of the month for artistic content, but it makes the cut because of what it IS of... OPENING DAY!

Baseball is back!  Could this be the year the Mariners finally go to the big game?  We'll see...

March
  Capital Lake

On the way down to Grays Harbor for "In The Light", we took a detour of sorts, and took a walk along Capital Lake, in Olympia.

There wasn't much wind, and the capital dome reflected nicely on the water... it was nice!

February
  A Volcano named Water

On the missionary trip to La Esperanza, in  Guatemala, I managed to capture this picture of the volcano Agua (water), towering above the city of Antiqua.  It's named "Agua" because until it erupted, its crater was, for most of the year, filled with water.

Its last major eruption occurred in 1966, and now the mountain serves primarily as the high ground for communication towers, and a draw for tourists.

January

This owl seemed to be guarding the entrance to North Head when we were getting out of the truck to check out the light on the 30th.

Seemingly unafraid, he watched the field while we maneuvered to get a picture.  Even the flash didn't faze him.  (I don't know if it was a "he", really, I'm just getting the gender from the Tootsie Pop commercials... "Mr. Owl, how many licks...")
