2010.08.18 - On the Ferry
< Back to Currently

We went on a trip for a few days, and part of it took us to the San Juans... part of our 12 months of Christmas trips

Heading out
There was a pretty heavy marine layer as we headed out... that cleared up as the day went by. Traffic was great!

Anacortes
We picked up the ferry to San Juan Island from Anacortes. It was settled in 1865, and was a major canning port for a variety of types of fish, as well as an important hub for the logging industry. Sadly, only a small portion of those operations remain, and now the town primarily relies on tourism

In line for the Ferry
We got there more than an hour early, and there was already a line... I'm glad we got there early!

In the terminal
Since we had the time, we did some exploring to let the little guy run the flies out. This was actually the first time I'd been in the terminal. We picked up a couple maps, and information packets about where to visit.

A bit of history
I checked out the signs and markers around the parking lot... I find stuff like that interesting!

Down by the water
We went down by the water to, as you might guess, toss some rocks.

Sediment layers
The shore line showed some interesting sediment layers. Seems the land in this area has a history of being both higher and lower than it is now...

Under the docks
The view under the docks was pretty interesting, and there were tide pools and stuff to look at

The Hyak
Before too long, the Hyak showed up, and we got ready to board

Heading on
No matter how many times I do it, it still feels weird to drive onto the ferry!

Out on the deck
After we parked, the little guy and I went out to check out the big boat.

Checking out the lounge
We found the lounge, and picked up a bite to eat.

Underway
After eating, we walked around some more.

Islands in the Sound
The Sound has quite a few islands in it, which made for some interesting scenery

Calm water
The water was VERY calm, and as we got closer to the San Juans, the haze faded quite a bit.

Passing a sailboat
We went down to the car deck so the little guy could take a nap, and watched the water go by from there.

Friday Harbor
Before too long, we pulled into Friday Harbor...

Ready to go
They really pack the cars in there! This was one of 5 lanes of cars.

Heading off
In short time, it was our turn to drive off the ferry, an on to San Juan Island... the next leg in our trip had begun!
