2010.08.18 - Lime Kiln Lighthouse
< Back to Currently

The first stop on our trip was the lighthouse at Lime Kiln Point.

Nice View
Once out of Friday Harbor, it was a short jaunt to the other side of the island, and to Lime Kiln State Park

Lime Kiln
The point is named for old Limestone drying kilns located near the point. San Juan island was once a very valuable source for limestone used to make Portland Cement for concrete

State Park
The lighthouse is part of the Lime Kiln State Park, which is the only state park in the US set up to do whale watching.

Heading down the trail
The little guy had a blast running on the trails down to the light

Clear water
The water was very clear!

The Lighthouse
Lime Kiln Light is pretty impressive, I think.

Fishing boats
While we were there, fishing boats headed out to do their thing.

Calm waters
The waters of the Sound were very smooth, which added to the great view we got of the rocky shoreline!

Heading to the light
We headed along the trail towards the light station

Small Lens
The lighthouse is considered a 'harbor light', even though its out on a point, since its in the Sound. It had a surprisingly small lens in it, but it was operating.

1919
Built in 1919, this lighthouse was also the last light automated on the West coast, largely due to the rocky terrain it was on, which made it difficult to run power out to the station.

Lime Kiln Light
The lighthouse was a great stop... great scenery, and great views of the water!
