2009.09.12 - A few days at Sol Duc
< Back to Currently

The last leg of our vacation was spent at Sol Duc, which is a small resort set up on several hot springs. Known for its warm mineral pools, Sol Duc is still one of those out of the way places that isn't overcrowded...

Heading out on a trail
There's tons of trails in the area... we picked one that took us out to what was supposed to be a good waterfall

Heading under the roadway
Not long into the trail, we passed under the highway

Big Cedar Tree
Most of the area is 'old growth', which means it hasn't been logged. Some of the trees were pretty impressive

Walking along the river
parts of the trail followed the stream

a cool bridge
There were a couple of these along the way. It made it fun, I thought anyway

Marymere Falls
The falls were pretty nice... well worth the walk up to them.

Pretty striking
Not a lot of water, but a fairly sizable drop!

Heading back
heading back, the little guy wanted to walk for a bit. I really like this picture!

Crescent Lake
The lake is pretty impressive!

Ranger Station
The Ranger Station had a really quaint look to it.

Early Salmon Run
It was a bit early, but the Sol Duc had a few salmon making their way upstream

Sol Duc Lodge
The current lodge is a shadow of the grand hotel that occupied the spot until a kitchen fire gutted it. A hospital also stood here, replaced by the lodge.

Some of the Cabins
These cabins were installed in the 70's. They're a bit dated, but nice. They had enough room for us, and all our stuff, and we still had 'moving around room'

Calming river
The Sol Duc river was VERY Clear. I walked up to it in order to see some salmon, but I guess we were a bit too far upstream for that.

The mineral baths
THe mineral baths are what folks come up here for. They were pretty nice, although I spent most of my time in the cooler 'kiddie' one.

Blackberries!
The little guy stopped for blackberries at every opportunity!

The Lake
Eventually, we had to head back home. We took a last look at the Lake, made plans to come back, and headed back to the Cascades.
