2009.07.03 - Down to Grays Harbor County
< Back to Currently

We went down to Grays Harbor County for the 4th of July weekend, and we started out on the 3rd. We were hoping that we'd miss the brunt of the traffic, but no such luck -- it seems that everyone else did that too!

Heading to sleepy town
Not long after we headed out, the little guy stopped telling us about all the trucks he saw... we looked back, and noticed that he was fading. Thankfully, he got a really good nap in, which helped keep him in a good mood for most of the trip.

Glad we're not going THAT way!
Highway 18 was backed up heading in the other direction. Seems that most folks in Maple Valley were heading over Snoqualmie Pass. It was smooth sailing in our direction, and we were pretty thankful for that!

Racing down I-5 at about 7mph
Once we hit I-5, though, our luck changed. We were forced to slog it out all the way down through Olympia. Once we got off the Interstate, and onto US 101, things opened up and we were able to make some decent headway.

Fun at a park
We stopped at a park in McCleary to give the little guy a chance to burn off some steam. He had a great time, well, until he fell off the slide. He was fine in the end, but it shook him - and us - up when it happened!

Heading into Aberdeen
As we got close to Aberdeen, we ran into traffic issues again. Quite a few folks were heading to the coast, and the roads heading through Aberdeen to the coastal towns were all backed up.

Empty
Weyerhaeuser closed its lumber operations in Aberdeen. It was very odd to see the yard comepletely empty.

Lady Washington
Lady Washington was moored very close to our Hotel. She was used in the movie 'Pirates of the Carribean'

Sprucing up
The crew was putting on some spit and polish in preparation for the 4th of July festivities in the Harbor.

Out on the beach!
After relaxing for a bit to let traffic die down, we went down to the beach to have some fun with the little guy. I still haven't gotten used to driving on the beach -- its still a novelty to me! =)

Counting Sand Castles
He's started learning his numbers, and likes to count everything... '1, 2, 5, 7, 9!'

Heading towards the water
The Shadow Lady took this picture of me and the little guy walking down to the water

Kites!
The little guy had a lot of fun playing in the sand, taking a break now and again to point out the kites, making sure we saw them, and of course, counting them to let us know how many there were.

Odd pricing scheme
The 3 and 4 piece meals were the same price... so I got a 4 piece. =) The prices seemed high... maybe it was for the holiday or something.
