2009.06.07 - Upgrading to Windows 7
< Back to Currently

I moved to Windows Vista as soon as it came out. It wasn't a very smooth transition, and I ended up rolling back to XP. When Service Pack 1 came out, I went back to Vista, and while I ended up really liking Vita, my system has required a lot of reboots, and it ran slow. Today, I upgraded to Windows 7 - which is only a 'Release Candidate' right now.

The longest Run
Oddly enough, when I installed the new OS, my computer was on its longest 'uptime' run.

Answering some Questions
Your options are clearly spelled out. I chose upgrade, to keep what I have installed. I figured that if it ran badly, I could always come back and do a wipe and reinstall later.

On its way
After a bit of file copying and thinking, it started on its way. Several reboots happen, but they are all automatic... you can walk away at this point and let it do its thing

Upgrading
this screen stayed up for a while. It would flash between this, 'checking your system', and 'searching for files'...

The first startup
The new startup screen is pretty cool. Better than the line, I think.

Cool
It stayed here for a while. I have a lot of stuff installed, so there likely was a lot to update.

Not long now
All the service accounts had to be updated to the new system account... this took a bit.

Setting network settings
It asked what network it was on - home, work, or public - this was comforting, because its an older netowrk card, and vista had major problems recognizing the card!

setting up the desktop
Getting REALLY close! =]

Less Resources
Tada! The first thing I noticed is that my gadgets made it... with Windows 7, the whole screen is now the Gadget bar.

Lets see how it goes
So far, so good! Every so often, updates to apps or windows requires a reboot. With Vista, I also had to reboot to get certain things to run again... I'm hoping Windows 7 has fixed that. We'll see how long it can go, and how good the experience is... my laptop has run flawlessly since I upgraded it about a month ago, so I'm thinking its going to be good!
