2009.03.05 - When a dusting turns into a mess
< Back to Currently

Right as we were leaving for work, it started to snow. Since we were on wildly differnt schedules, and the Jeep's wipers dont work, the Shadow Lady left early to make sure that she made it out ok -- her car doesn't like the snow all that much.

Dusting
Just before we were going to head out for work, it started to snow. I thought that the estimate of '1-2' inches was low, the Shadow Lady left early (with some prompting), to avoid the worst of it.

Trash Cans
I drug the cans up the driveway, and then noticed a few minutes later that my tracks were already being covered up...

The Ledge
Heading out, I stopped to get a pic of Rattlesnake Ledge. There was a LOT more snow falling up there than we were getting!

Heading down
Heading down, I quickly fell below the snow line, Although there was a lot of slush on the roads... down here, it was a rain/snow mix

Clear Highway
The highway was largely clear, except that it was a rain/snow mix here, too, and the highway had a layer of shlush on it.

A bit of trouble
Some folks don't know how to drive... most of the sliding was speed related, in my opinion. A mustang came up behind me, and pulled out to pass, and kept going to the left, into the ditch. I'm sure his day wasn't a happy one.

Traffic!
Just as I got down to my exit for work, I ran into a pretty hefty backup... glad I wasn't continuing on. On the radio, the announcers were pretty busy describing all the wrecks.

Just Rain
Down at the MS campus, it was just rain.

Heading Home
Heading home, there were some sun breaks here and there.

Heavy Clouds
As I headed back up into the foothills of home, the clouds looked heavier and heavier. They were saying on the radio that the passes were a mess.

Traffic of a different kind
This was good evidence of that. The state patrol stopped the truckers at exit 32 to chain up, and since there wasn't a chain-up area that far down (they usually chain up at exit 34, but it was already a mess there), they just took up the slow lane.

Chaining up
There were LOTSof trucks chaining up... they looked pretty busy.

Heading up
I weaved my way through the trucks, and headed up into the hills to my neighborhood... and into deeper snow. This guy seems to have given up a bit early.

Snowed in
The plow had come by a few times, and we were basically snowed in.

Trash Cans
My trash cans had been knocked over by the plow. It wasn't too bad -- at least the trash truck had come by!

Shovelling out
I shoveled out the driveway so the Shadow Lady would have a place to park. It was a heavy, wet snow, and it seemed it had turned to rain at one point. Not the funnest snow to shovel, but it only took me an hour or so, so it wasn't too bad.
