2009.02.07 - Out for a morning walk
< Back to Currently

The guys in my Bible study group got together early in the morning on a Saturday for a walk... its the start of a recurring event. We looked online and found a good 'starter' trail that took us to an overlook for a 'unique view of Snoqualmie Falls'. I forgot my camera, but I had my phone.

The 'I was there' shot
Before we headed out, we stopped to pose for a shot of the sign at the trail head.

Rail road grade
The trail was an old railroad grade. It had been surfaced some time ago, and made for an easy walk

Rain problems
Parts of the trail showed damage from the recent flooding. This area was experiencing a slow slide.

Drainage
This drain reminded me of the drains mentioned in Steven King's book 'It'

Ent
We all agreed that if a tree COULD be an ent, then this one would be it

End of the line
After a mile and a half or so, we got to the end of the trail.

Benches
There were some benches set up to view the falls

A place to take in the view
It seemed like a nice place... if it wasn't foggy

Trail extension
To try to get to a place to get a better view, we followed a trail to a nearby hill.

The Unique View
The view we had of the falls. We hung around for a while, but it got worse as we waited

More Fog
The fog made for a good view with the trees.

Heading back
Heading back, the fog got a bit thicker

A new location
Since we didn't get a look at the falls, we went to another location that would give us a view

On the big rock
Jeff climed up on the rock for a picture

Power Station
Around the turn of the century, they built this power station, which is now operated by Puget Sound Eneregy. It has two generators, and generates around 50 KW.

Boardwalk
A boardwalk takes you out to the falls.

Water pipes
A portion of the river is siphoned off, and flows through the generators. You could hear the water rushing through the pipes.

Along the Boardwalk
Once through the plant, the boardwalk takes you along the river to the falls.

The Falls
Its a pretty impressive view!

Effects of the flooding
The river showed the effects of the recent flooding. A few weeks ago, there was a LOTof water pounding around this bend

Water line
One look at the trees along the river's banks showed you how high the water got -- the plants and the like were washed away. It was pretty striking.

Interesting
It seemed to us that parts of the boardwalk had been under water. It was on the inside of the bend, which would have shielded most of the flow.

My 'I was there'
I posed for the obligatory picture that proves I was there. =]

Snoqualmie River
We had a great view of the river from the boardwalk.

Flood Damage
The river overran the roadway at this location, and the road was actually getting undermind... I'm not sure how long that rock had been there.

USGS river gage
Just down from the falls, there's a USGS Stream Gaging station, one of the one's that I check on the Internet when it rains and the rivers start swelling up.
