As Fall has progressed into Winter, we've noticed that
the Suet is becoming more and more popular with the local
bird populations... its a fun event when a new kind of bird
shows up to grab a snack -- the list is growing! :)
Today, we got a Northern Flicker, which is a woodpecker that
ranges through the whole state. It shows on the map
that they head out of the higher elevations in the cooler
weather, so maybe this one is heading down the slopes.

It seemed more curious of me rather than being afraid as I
took the pictures. It was MUCH more interested in the
food!

The males have a spot of red near the base of the beak, so
this one was a female. The females also have rows of
spots on their backs, rather than the more random-looking
pattern that the males have.

It is a very striking-looking bird, and one of the larger
ones to visit the feeding station. It stayed for quite a
while, and actually jabbed a hole clean through the suet
block.
Pretty good entertainment for a buck a block, that's for
sure!
