2007.10.15 - Childbirth Classes

The Shadow Lady and I went to our second to last Childbirth Class... For this one, we covered feeding, dealing with labor, and diapering & dressing.  Best of all... NO gross video to watch, and no descriptions of the steps of a C-Section!

The dealing with labor portion went around how intrusive it was to wait for the "5-1-1" sequence prior to coming in to the hospital.  A timer would ding every 5 minutes, and we'd all pick up a bag of ice and hold it in our hand for 1 minute, while she talked about how to get a good "Latch", and the differences when using a bottle.

She had the guys doing it too, so we could "get at least SOME of the enjoyment"...

It was pretty cold... but it gave us a good idea of what it would be like to deal with the early ramp-up to labor.

During the break, the "new born" doll babies came out, so that we could practice on them.

She walked us through putting on a diaper, putting on a "onsie", and swaddling.  She also showed us clothing options such as "Swaddle Me" that would allow the baby to keep warm, and not risk a blanket causing problems.

We got into groups, and took turns dressing and undressing the dolls, and practicing handing it off, and moving between different carrying positions.

The groups were guys and gals... I think my group picked it up OK.

One of the guys had practice - his sister was born when he was older, so he had experience helping out with her... so he was a pro, especially compared to us!

I did OK, I think... :)  It won't be too long, and I'll be putting these skills to actual use!
