2007.06.22 - Griffey's Return

The ticket pack we got this year happened to give us a ticket to the game that had Ken Griffey Jr's return game to Safeco Field.... we couldn't have planned it any better... :-)

Before the game, they did a "Welcome back, Junior" celebration - Ken Sr also played for the Mariners, and father and son played for a while on the same team - they even hit back to back home runs at one point, which has never been done, before or since.

Jay and Edgar came out to greet their friend, and they spent a few minutes reliving good times... it was fun!

Sadly, the team running out onto the field got a much smaller applause.
Griffey stroked one down the first base line to a HAIL of cheers... Griffey got a hit at Safeco, and apparently nobody cared it was for the other team.

He got on base twice, both times to the cheers of an enthusiastic crowd.

The Mariners were jilted or something, because before too long it was 10-1.

Hardgrove, the manager, came out, jawed for a while with the umpire, and got himself thrown out of the game.

We left, too...  the rout was on.  The final score ended up being 16-1: the worst wuppin the Mariners ever had.

The M's came back to win the next two games, and Griffey stroked two home runs with that familiar swing, and cocky stance, watching the ball as he walked to first base, again, to a FLOOD of cheers. He left town saying he'd like to come back to retire as a Mariner.  Apparently, the fans would really like that as well.  If he brings his winning spirit, then I'm all for it!
